Arsenal goalkeeper Petr Cech believes Ryan Mason’s determination to return to football after suffering a fractured skull makes him an “inspiration” for others.

Mason had to undergo surgery at St Mary’s Hospital in London after clashing heads with England team-mate Gary Cahill while playing for Hull against Chelsea on January 22, 2017.

The collision eventually forced the midfielder to retire from football on Tuesday at the age of 26 following “the guidance of numerous world-renowned neurologists and neurosurgeons”.

But Cech, who himself suffered a depressed skull fracture while playing for Chelsea in 2006, believes Mason should be applauded for the way in which he dealt with his rehabilitation.

The Arsenal goalkeeper wrote on Twitter: “Yesterday was a sad day for one incredible young man @RyanMason.

“Although his story didn’t finish with ultimate happy ending, his determination, attitude and bravery he’s shown during his recovery is something to be admired and an inspiration for others! All the best Ryan.”

Cahill also took to social media to express his support for Mason, writing on Twitter: “Devastated to hear today’s news from Ryan.

“Competing for a corner is something we’ve done thousands of times and to see those consequences for a top professional like Ryan is heartbreaking.

“Sending all my love to him and his family, and wishing him the best for the future.”
