Many NBA stars after earning so much money at the court and so much respect at the bank could not hold on to their money after they retired. It’s some that happens to most athletes in general; they don’t have good financial discipline and they end up blowing away tones of millions.
Who would have thought that an NBA star would be homeless after retirement or even have to hawk in street with their Champions Ring to feed themselves. Let’s look at 5 NBA Stars who got broke after retiring.
Antoine Walker
1.Antoine Walker earned $108 million over his entire NBA career but bad lifestyle choices left him bankrupt after 2 years of retiring from his 13 years NBA career. He filed for bankruptcy in 2010. He spent his money on shouldering the financial burdening of 70 people; family and friends and that was not enough for him as he surrounded himself with a fleet of cars.



“I came into the League at 19 years so I understand the pressure they are going through at this age. The main thing I try to let them know is there are things I didn’t think about. I didn’t think at 19 what it would be like not to have money at 39 years old” the 44 year old retired basketball player explained in a Question and Answer interview with Sports Illustrated.
Latrell Sprewell
2. Latrell Sprewell who made All times NBA first team for 3 times caused his own downfall and has only his attitude to blame for the punishment he’s going through. He led Golden State Warriors to the playoffs in 1994 but had his contract terminated a while after for chocking the neck of his coach who only corrected him on his pass.  It was reinstated through arbitration but his indiscipline off the pitch got him traded to Timberwolves.

Struggling to pay child support, he was sued for $200 million and had his yacht taken after defaulting his mortgage payment of $1.5 million. He lost his house 2 years after Milwaukee Bucks chased him for $3 million back tax payment. The $100 million plus he earned in his NBA career was all blown up. As at 2015, he was reportedly worth $50,000.
Jason Caffey
3. Jason Caffey, the 2 times NBA Champion lost all the $34 million he earned in his career. From extravagant living to paying up of child support for his 10 children by 8 different women and fines of assault charges, Caffey lost all he had. His anxiety disorder brought his NBA career to an abrupt end with indiscipline financial responsibilities, he went bankrupt.
Allen Iverson
4. Allen Iverson, the 2001 NBA MVP revealed during a court proceeding on his divorce in 2012 that he was broke. The retired Philadelphia 67ers player was known for his great scoring and shooting abilities. He squandered his $160 million earnings on drugs, alcohol and compounding legal fines. He has a $30 million trust fund set for him by Adidas but he can only touch it when he turns 55. The retired player is currently 42 years.

Rick Mahorn
5. Rick Mahorn after retiring from NBA was no longer rich. Great skills on the court and helping Piston and Detroits earned him a lot of money but the bad economy in Motown caught up with his property investment and that was the beginning of his doom. He filed for bankruptcy in 2010 after he traded his Championship rings for survival.
